How I Use Drones to Bring Stories to Life

A New Way to Tell Stories from the Sky

When I first picked up a drone, I had no idea it would change how I see the world.

At Sky Perth, we don’t just capture footage; “we tell stories from the sky”.

Aerial photography and videography allow us to share moments in ways that ground cameras simply can’t.

Over the years, I’ve provided content to Netflix, AppleTV+, Disney+, SBS, and Stan, using drones to create stunning visuals that draw viewers in. Whether it’s a city skyline, a remote landscape, or a high-energy event, drones give us a fresh perspective that turns ordinary moments into something cinematic.

But there’s more to drone storytelling than flying high. Planning, creativity, and the right techniques are what bring a story to life. Let me take you behind the scenes to show you how I do it.

Choosing the Right Drone for the Story

Different projects require different tools. That’s why at Sky Perth, we use a variety of equipment:

  • Cinema Drones – These offer high-resolution cameras for ultra-clear shots, making them perfect for film and TV.
  • FPV Drones – Fast and agile, these create immersive, action-packed footage.
  • Helicopters & Aeroplanes – Because drones have limitations on altitude, locations, and distances, we use helicopters and planes to film in areas where drones aren’t permitted or can’t reach safely. This ensures we get the best possible shots while complying with aviation laws.

Every story needs the right perspective. A wide, slow-moving shot might set the scene, while a fast, low-angle drone flight can add excitement. The key is knowing when and how to use each tool.

The Process of Drone Storytelling

Bringing a story to life from the air takes more than just flying a drone. Here’s how I approach it:

  1. Planning the Shot – I start by understanding the story and what emotions we want to capture. Do we need a peaceful sunrise or a dramatic chase?
  2. Scouting Locations – Checking the area before filming helps find the best angles and avoid obstacles.
  3. Timing the Flight – Lighting is everything! Golden hour (just after sunrise and before sunset) creates the best natural light.
  4. Capturing the Action – Using smooth movements and natural transitions makes the footage feel professional and cinematic.
  5. Editing for Impact – Post-production turns raw footage into a powerful visual story with colour grading, stabilisation, and sound design.

No two projects are the same, so adapting is key. Whether filming a high-speed action sequence or a quiet landscape, I ensure every shot fits the narrative.

Challenges and Lessons from the Sky

Aerial storytelling isn’t always easy. Over the years, I’ve faced challenges like:

  • Unpredictable Weather – Wind, rain, and lighting conditions can change fast, requiring flexibility.
  • Regulations & Permissions – Flying legally is crucial. Knowing local drone laws ensures safe and responsible filming.
  • Battery Life & Equipment Limits – Planning ahead helps avoid unexpected technical failures.

The key to overcoming these is preparation and experience. Every challenge has taught me something new, making each flight smoother than the last.

Where Drone Storytelling is Heading

Drones are changing the way we see the world. In the next few years, I see drone storytelling evolving in exciting ways:

  • More FPV Cinematics – As first-person-view drones become more advanced, they’ll add more dynamic movement to videos.
  • Live Drone Broadcasting – Drones will make live sports and events even more immersive.
  • Environmental & Social Storytelling – Drones can show the world in ways never seen before, from climate change documentaries to remote humanitarian missions.

At Sky Perth, we’re always pushing the limits of what drones can do. The future is full of possibilities, and I can’t wait to see where this technology takes us next.

My Final Thoughts

Drones do more than fly; they tell stories.

By choosing the right equipment, planning the perfect shot, and overcoming challenges, we can create breathtaking visuals that connect with audiences on a deeper level.
