A Lesson in Doing Things the Right Way

Every project teaches a lesson. It could be about problem-solving, teamwork, or the importance of preparation. Some lessons stay with you, shaping your approach to every project that follows. One of my recent projects with 7NEWS and The West Australian Media Services reminded me why doing things the right way matters.

The goal was ambitious: showcase the behind-the-scenes operation of a major newspaper. We wanted to capture a bustling environment filled with conveyor belts moving at high speeds, autonomous trolleys gliding seamlessly across the floor, and people working everywhere to ensure the papers were ready for delivery. The challenge was delivering visually engaging footage that stayed true to the story while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

This project wasn’t just about flying drones. It was about proving that doing things right—not cutting corners—is the foundation of trust in this industry.

The Challenge: Tight Spaces and High Stakes

Flying FPV drones is thrilling but not without challenges. This project brought a unique set of obstacles. The space was tight, with narrow corridors and moving machines. Flying close to people added another layer of complexity. Every turn, dive, and hover required precision. Mistakes weren’t an option.

Safety was the top priority. The proximity to workers and machinery meant there was no room for error. A single misstep could disrupt the entire operation or, worse, put someone at risk. This wasn’t just about following regulations. It was about being responsible and professional.

The stakes were high. FPV drones are incredible tools for capturing immersive, dynamic footage. However, their agility and speed can also make them dangerous if not handled properly. The challenge wasn’t just technical; it was mental. Staying calm, focused, and confident in such an environment is easier said than done.

The Approach: Showcasing a Different Perspective

Our approach was simple but required meticulous planning. We wanted to capture the heart of the newspaper operation from a perspective that felt immersive and engaging. The FPV drone would glide through conveyor belts, follow autonomous trolleys as they moved across the facility, and capture the rhythm of people working together.

This wasn’t just about the visuals. It was about telling a story. Newspapers are a part of our everyday lives, but few people see the intricate process behind them. We wanted to highlight the precision, teamwork, and technology that make it all possible.

Planning was everything. Before the shoot, we spent hours mapping out the facility, identifying potential hazards, and deciding on the best flight paths. Each shot was rehearsed multiple times to ensure safety and accuracy. Communication with the client was key. They trusted us to deliver, and we involved them in the planning process.

The Lesson: Preparation is Everything

The most valuable lesson from this project was the importance of preparation. Having the proper permits, insurance, and certifications wasn’t just about compliance. It was about peace of mind. Knowing that every box was checked allowed us to focus on what we do best—flying drones and creating stunning visuals.

When you cut corners, you’re constantly looking over your shoulder.

You’re worrying about what might go wrong instead of focusing on the task at hand. That’s not how I want to operate. Being prepared means giving your full attention to the creative process, knowing that everything else is taken care of.

It’s also about trust. Clients expect professionalism, and transparency about permits and safety measures builds that trust.

They don’t just hire you for your skills; they hire you for your integrity.

Personal Reflection: Doing the Right Thing

This project reinforced a belief I’ve always held: do the right thing, even when no one is watching.

In the drone industry, it’s not uncommon to see operators taking shortcuts. They might skip permits, avoid insurance, or bend the rules to save time and money. It’s tempting, especially when clients don’t always know what to look for.

But here’s the thing: cutting corners is a short-term gain with long-term consequences. If something goes wrong, the liability falls on you. More importantly, it’s a betrayal of the trust your clients have placed in you.

I’ve seen operators do anything to get the perfect shot, even if it means breaking the rules.

But that’s not how I operate.

My focus is on doing things the right way, not just because it’s the law, but because it’s the right thing to do. When you operate with integrity, you build a reputation that lasts.

Behind the Scenes: The Human Element

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was capturing the people behind the operation. It’s easy to focus on the machines and technology, but the real heartbeat of any operation is its people.

From workers ensuring the conveyor belts ran smoothly to teams managing the flow of trolleys, everyone played a vital role. Capturing their hard work required care and respect. Flying a drone near people is always a delicate task. You have to balance getting the shot with ensuring everyone feels safe and comfortable.

This experience reminded me of the human element in every project. It’s not just about the footage; it’s about the story. And the story is always about the people.

Why Integrity Matters

In today’s competitive landscape, it’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing. You see operators cutting corners and wonder if you’re being too rigid. But integrity isn’t just about following rules; it’s about being true to yourself and your values.

This project was a reminder that doing things right isn’t always the easiest path, but it’s the most rewarding one. It’s about building trust with your clients, your team, and yourself.

When you operate with integrity, you don’t just deliver a service; you build lasting relationships.

The Takeaway: Trust is Everything

This project was more than just a chance to capture incredible footage. It was an opportunity to reaffirm the values that guide me as a drone operator and business owner.

At Sky Perth, we believe in doing things the right way. That means planning every detail, prioritising safety, and being transparent with our clients. It means focusing on the work, not the shortcuts.

Every project is a chance to learn and grow.

This one reminded me that trust is the foundation of success. When you do things right, you don’t just deliver great results; you build a reputation that speaks for itself.
