When you see Perth’s skyline illuminated in blue, it’s hard to imagine the long night behind the beauty. The Say G’day campaign, an initiative by St Bart’s, which aims to raise awareness for homelessness, brought together not just iconic landmarks but the hard work of a determined team. As Sky Perth, we had the honour and challenge of capturing this stunning display. But it was far from easy.

A Mission That Stretched Beyond the City

Our task was straightforward: film 22 Perth buildings that were set to light up in blue, shining a light on homelessness. However, despite the initial plan, only 12 of these locations actually lit up as expected. Yet, in a show of unexpected solidarity, additional buildings that weren’t on the official list joined the cause. It was as if the city itself had decided to speak up.

Most people don’t know how far we travelled across the city, from Joondalup Drive Bridge to the intricate beauty of Optus Stadium. Our team drove several kilometres throughout the night, often battling harsh elements and operating under strict safety protocols, particularly for nighttime drone flights.

The Unseen Challenges

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we began our mission. The first few locations were smooth, but the city had other plans. Rain clouds gathered overhead, turning a light rain into heavier showers that tested our equipment and patience. Then came the mosquitos by the river; they swarmed in such numbers that even our protective clothing was no match.

With 22 locations on the agenda and only 12 glowing blue, we had to work fast. Time was ticking, and every delay could mean missing the perfect shot. But it wasn’t just about capturing buildings; it was about conveying the emotional weight of the campaign. Every frame had to tell the story of a community standing together to support those most in need.

The Unexpected Support

As we moved across the city, something magical happened. Additional buildings that weren’t on our list started lighting up in blue. The Say G’day campaign was spreading further than we’d anticipated. Locations like Matagarup Bridge, Rio Tinto and QV1 joined in, showcasing the incredible power of unity. It was a testament to Perth’s heart, a city that cares, even in the quietest hours.

A Happy Ending, Despite the Challenges

By the end of our eight-hour shoot, we had captured something far more than just a city skyline. We’d documented a community coming together for a cause that mattered deeply. Every building lit up in blue was a beacon of hope, a reminder that even the smallest gestures can make a difference.

When we reviewed the footage, it was clear that the effort had been worth it. Despite the rain, the mosquitoes, and the challenges of operating in the dark, the footage captured Perth at its finest, not just visually but in spirit. The campaign was a success, and as we look toward 2025, we’re excited to continue supporting this important cause, only on a grander scale.

The Say G’day campaign was more than just a visual spectacle; it was a testament to the resilience of our team and the compassion of Perth’s community. Sky Perth is proud to have been a part of this journey, capturing the city’s beauty and the heart behind it.

Despite our many challenges, weather, time constraints, and unexpected hurdles, the final result was a powerful statement about the importance of acknowledging those experiencing homelessness.
