Yesterday was World Mental Health Day, and it made me reflect on just how important mental health is in our personal lives and work. At Sky Perth, where precision and high standards are part of the job, it’s easy to feel the weight of stress, and I’ve personally felt how it can impact everything we do.

I’ve had days where the stress built up to the point that it affected my ability to focus. I’ve missed small details, felt overwhelmed by tasks that would normally be straightforward, and found it more challenging to lead with confidence. I used to think that pushing through was the only way forward, that powering through the stress meant I was strong. But the reality is that ignoring mental health doesn’t make it go away. It creeps into our work, decisions, and how we relate to others.

In this industry, where every decision counts, being mentally sharp isn’t just a luxury; it’s essential. Whether we’re handling complex projects or navigating tight deadlines, our mental health directly impacts our performance.

I’ve noticed that staying patient, managing stress, and engaging fully with my team is harder when I’m mentally drained. But when I’m in a good headspace, everything feels easier. I’m able to think more clearly, tackle challenges head-on, and make better decisions that benefit everyone around me.

I’m not saying I’ve got it all figured out. But over the years, I’ve learned that taking care of my mental health is just as important as taking care of my physical health, if not more so. I’ve found that small changes, whether it’s stepping away from my desk for a few minutes, talking to someone about what’s on my mind, or simply prioritising rest, can make a massive difference.

It’s easy in our line of work to get caught up in the mindset that we need to keep pushing, keep grinding, keep showing up no matter what. But the truth is, when we neglect our mental health, it catches up with us. It shows up in how we lead, how we communicate, and ultimately, in the results we deliver.

As we move forward from World Mental Health Day, I hope we all take a moment to think about how we can better support ourselves and each other. Our mental health matters. It impacts our work, our relationships, and our ability to thrive in a demanding industry like ours.

By making it a priority, we not only improve our well-being but also create a stronger, more supportive environment wherever we are.

Best,

Rodrigo Branco Matsumoto.
